Notes for Gerald Langford SYMES
Gerald was a very keen mountaineer & many people believed that he would never get married, because he appeared to be ‘married’ to his mounatains. He worked for the New Zealand Electricity Department & was sent to several power stations in both the North & South Islands. When the Aviemore Power Station was built in North Otago, he went there as its first (and last!) Superintendent. One of his tasks was to rationalise three power stations & he had to co-ordinate them all. About 25% of his time was spent in sorting out quarrels within the Department. He took up golf late in life which he thoroughly enjoyed. He discovered taht an ancestor on his mother’s side is buried at the east end of Salisbury Cathedral cloisters: ‘Sarah CANE, widow of the late Basil CANE of Kimpton in the county of Hnats. Died May 13th 1803, aged 62’. It was discovered that Gerald had cancer in September 1991, three months after Joy had died. Although he received from his major operation, he had a relapse and died in December 1992, two months after his younger daughter Geraldine’s death. (Steve Osmond July 1999)
Notes for Joyce Evelyn (Spouse 1)
Joy, together with her younger sister Fay, attended the Craighead Diocesan School at Timaru. She was asked to teach the kindergarten class by the Head Teacher & eventually gained her teaching certificate, moving to Christchurch. She taught in several country schools. In later life, Joy was the local representative in the NZ Travel Club Society. In 1987, she & Gerald, togwether with her brother Osmond & sister Fay & her husband Geoff, attended the second Osmond Family Reunion at Woodford near Salisbury, England. (Steve Osmond July 1999)
