Notes for Arthur John BRIDGEWATER
Arthur’s parents were married in 1864 & his mother was known as ‘Amy’. She was John’s second wife, his first being Sarah Mary nee Elkington (born 1825); married: 1851; died: 1851.

He was an accountant with the New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Company Ltd. in Timaru. He was made redundant by the company during the Depression & worked for himself until his retirement. He was a licensed lay-reader of the Anglican church & often took services in the Timaru area. The moved to Christchurch in 1933.

Sadly by 1936, he was in mental decline which got progressively worse until he died, to the extent that when he went with his wife and daughters to England in 1938, he did not realise on their return to New Zealnd that he was not still in England. (Steve Osmond)
Notes for Gertrude Evelyn (Spouse 1)
Evelyn kept a personal diary for the years 1892 & 1894 which have survived. In it, one discovers that she, together with her mother Ellen & her elder sister Madeline visited England from May 1892 until October 1894. The diary records that they sailed from Wellington immediately after her sister Mabel’s wedding on 17th March.

They stayed at Salisbury in the English home (3 Westbourne, Wilton Rd) of Walter Marsh Osmond, Ellen’s youngest brother & his wife Isabelle for the duration, making visits to Browne relations at Guildford & Osmond relations in LOndon & Broadstairs. Whilst at Salisbury, she attended the Godolphin School for Girls & later the School of Art. (Steve Osmond)
