Notes for Samuel (Spouse 1)
When Samuel first started work, he earned 6d per day. Samuelwent to Lincoln at the age of 14 as an apprentice to JamesLowther, grocer and baker. When he was 24 years of age, he setup his own business, a bakehouse in Ingham. Later on he opened ashop, which became well known in the district as S Hayes & sons- grocers, bakers & provision merchants. In particular they wereknown for their pork pies. The Hayes name was well known far andwide and Samuel carried on his business for 40 years and retiredin 1906 to 31 Beaumont-fee, Lincoln. His three elder sons tookover the business and was the first in the area to use a 'stamp'system. Every Friday the family would rise early to sell at theLincoln market. (C Hayes 11.9.97)

The 1881 Census records that Samuel had a Grocer and Bakersassistant, Edward ELLISS, aged 16, plus the family had a generalservant, Rebecca CLARKE aged 15.

They were strict people and had 12 children. They used toholiday in the Ilse of Wight. Samuel was a member of the LinconBoard of Guardians for 9 years, a superintendent of the sundayschool for 24 years adn a church warden. (C Hayes 11.9.97)
