Arthur was a farmer at Meota, SK, Canada (SW6-47-18-3). (C Hayes11.9.97)
Arthur worked in a drapery shop in Lincoln, prior to emigratingto Canada cicra 1905. He arrived at Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba andworked in the woods cutting logs for a short time. He then wentto Meota to help on a farm. He then filed for 160 acres to starta homestead - SW 6-47-18-3. Four chaps, all green Englishmen,took up residence on one section. they lived in the smae housein the center of the section and took turns going in winter towork. Arthur had no farming background, so he learned throughhis mistakes. The other chaps were, Jack Hole, who later becamethe butcher in Meota. Jonny Davis, carried on with farming. JimMartin did all the cooking, had sight in only one eye and wasrather helpless, and in fact shot an owl, thinking it was aduck ! Later in life Arthur became the director of the PrairieFarm Rehabilitation Assistance Dept. He retired in 1946 to thevillage of Meota. (Info from Gordon, Arthur's son - C Hayes11.9.97)

Arthur Henry was born on the 31st December 1876 and was baptisedon the 28th January 1877 at Ingham Lincolnshire to Samuel andLucy Hayes. He moved to Saskatchewan Canada circa 1904. Hemarried Annie Maria Taylor in 1912 at Bresaylor, saskatchewanCanada and they had five children. He died on the 15th May 1963at St paul's Hospital, Saskatoon SK and was buried on the 17thMay 1963 at Meota Cemetery, Meota SK. The service was held at StMary's Anglican Church Meota. Arthur was a strong community man and was involved in mostcommittees in the Meota area. He was particularly active in theProgressive Party, which was partly socialist, but swicthed tobeing a staunch Liberal for the rest of his life. He helpedorganise and was one of the original founders of theSaskatchewan Wheat Pool in 1923/4 for the Meota and areadistrict. Arthur later became the Wheat Pool delegate for theMeota District. He travelled the northwest region of theprovince with a team of horses campaigning on behalf of theMeota Wheat Pool; the district alsoincluded Biggar to thesouth. (C Hayes 11.9.97)
Arthur was not a patient man especially around chickens andhorses. When he retired he bought an old cottage near a lakewhich belonged to the North West Mounted Police. The bathroomwindow still bore eveidence of the old window bars, plus therewas the old jail cell. (C Hayes 11.9.97)

Annie Maria is the daughter of Alexander Taylor and MaryMcDonald, born on the 26th April 1894 at Battleford Barracksduring the Riel Rebellion. She married Arthur Henry Hayes in1912 at Bresaylor, Saskatchewan, Canada and they had fivechildren. She died on the 14th March 1951 in SK Canada and wasburied on the 18th March 1951 at Meota Cemetery, Meota SK. Theservice was held at St mary's Anglican Church Meota. Annie wasof a gentle disposition, left-handed and refused to be cared forby her son. She had problems with a duodenum ulcer and could notdigest her food properly. (C Hayes 11.9.97)
