Bill attended Martin Village School (Mary King School), which opened around 1762 and was rebuilt in 1842. (Mark D. 29.10.96)

Once during harvesting Bill broke his thigh by falling from a pile of hay during harvesting. (Mark 14.5.97)

Bill was a farm worker and a lorry driver for Messrs parker of Scopwick for over twenty years. 'Mr Parker, his employer used to say that Bill was one of the best workers he had ever had - he would do anything and go anywhere.' (Mark 29.10.96 & 14.5.97)

Bill was careful with money - 'Wouldn't spend a penny if aha'penny would do'. In his younger days he was a member of the Sunday School and choir, plus he was keen on country pursuits, rabbiting, gardening, kept pigs etc.. (Mark D. 29.10.96)

Bill died from a brain injury after being struck by a piece of metal from a hoist which pulled sacks of corn from his lorry into Pennell's warehouse, Princes Street on what is now Brayford Wharf East on the 31st of July 1957. The metal which had been left on top of the hoist by workmen fell and struck him on the side of the head. This happened as the last sack from his lorry was being hauled up and he was clearing his lorry. He died in Lincoln County Hospital next day, after being operated on. 'If he had survived he would have been a 'cabbage'.' See news paper article on file. (Mark 29.10.96 & 14.5.97)

'It was believed that the metal was kicked down by the foreman(?). Another driver stated that he had seen it kicked down and that it was a regular action.' (Mark 14.5.97)

He died after an injury to the head 1.8.1957 at Lincoln County Hospital. He and his wife lived in a tied cottage on Heath Laneat Nocton, Lincs. They had four children. (Mark D. 29.10.96& 14.5.97)

The death certificate for William DUCKERING records that he died on the 1st August 1957 at County Hospital Lincoln, from fractured skull due to a metal bar falling on his head while at work due to accident. This was certified by the Coroner for the City of Lincoln. His occupation is given as a lorry driver. (See certificate on file - Mark 1.6.98)
