He moved to Canada as 'HomeBoy' under the auspices of Barnados Homes, who are based in the Barkingside, just a little way from East London. He was assigned to the Duckering farm and married Keziah Jane Duckering in the 1910's. They eventaully moved to Oshawa Ontario where he workedf or Cooper Smith Grain and Feed. 'Following her husbands death, Ann HIGGINS and her infant son moved in with a Joseph THWAITES and during this time Annie and Albert THWAITES were born. Joseph was taken into Barnado's on the 5th May 1887. Ann HIGGINS and Joseph THWAITES were married some time after Mary Ann was born. They lived in Stepney, East End of London. Joseph stayed at Kinnaird House in London's East End, was boarded out for a time in a private home, and then returned to Barnado's Leopold House in the East End of London prior to sailing to Canada on the S.S. Carthagenian arriving at Halifax on the 28th March 1892. He was 12 years old.

He arrived with his Barnado belt and inscribed buckle, all his belongings (including his shoe last, for Barnado's had trained him in the art of shoe making) in a metal suitcase. He also had his bible, given to him by Barnado's. (The bible is John Higgins possession)

He initially worked for a Mr Cowen of Bosworth Ontario and in 1896 went ot the employ of Mr S P Brown at Arthur Ontario.

In 1908, Joseph was again requested to change employers and was sent to Lot 8, Concession 13, Maryboro Township, Wellington County, Province of Ontario. His employer was Mr Charles DUCKERING, who was alone on the farm with his daughter Drusilla Elizabeth who in later years we all came to know as 'Aunt Lizzie'.

Joseph worked for the Duckering's until the sale of the farm in 1910, when he was dismissed. (John Higgins letter 4th September 2001)
