Notes for David Frank (Spouse 1)
David Frank Rooke... he added the "e" to the name because he didn't think that "Rook" looked finished.
Born: March 24th, 1886, Little Britain, Ontario, Canada
Loved to write poems and signed them "hayseed" I only wish that I had saved one of them now.
Granddad also loved to carve whistles for us out of small branches of trees. And they worked! I can still remember the little "pea" inside the whistle!
Granddad loved sponge toffee and he even showed me how to make it when I was a kid! I've loved it ever since!
When you are working on your family tree, you really have to check your stories... as interesting as they may be. Granddad had three different versions as to how his mother ended up in Canada. In one version, she was born in England and came over with her parents. In another version, she was born on the ship on the way over, and in another version, she was born in Canada. While you love stories that your grandparents share, they might not be right!
*UPDATE: I was talking to mom this morning and I brought up the topic of Camp X. Out of no where she said that she thought that Grandad had worked there as a guard. "I haven't thought about that in years," she said!
Granddad actually had a brother (Uncle Charlie) who would not open mail if his last name had an "e" on the end. That infuriated him!
Places Granddad lived...
Sundridge... we visited him often when we were children. He loved the woods. Loved to live off the land and poisoned himself and his daughter once when they ate mushrooms.
I remember hearing that he once fell out of a tree and broke his neck. If anyone knows any details of this, be sure to contact me. He seemed to heal nicely from what I can remember. He was always on the go somewhere!
Granddad lived in Apsley with my mom and dad for a while before moving to Whitby5998
