On looking at Ann Johnson/Archer and her records with Harry’s, it it suggests that Harry has left Ann and is living with Ethel as husband and wife unofficially.

Alfred Whitley, boarder, age 27 8 months, married born Heckmondwike, Yorkshire, a painter, and Rosa J Whitley, age 26 11 months, married, born Romsey, Hampshire, home duties.
There is no obvious record for Ann in the 1939 register or her death. She may have used her ‘Johnson’ surname, as in the 1901 Census. In searching for Joseph her son, there is no record with him and his mother in the 1939 register, as I believe he has married and made his own life.
This therefore suggests that Ann may well have still be alive, when Harry met Ethel and they identified themselves as a married couple. As when you search the records for a marriage between a Ford and Duckering, only one turns up and that is my younger sister!

1968 I have assumed that Ethel Douglass died in 1968 Scarborough - this could be wrong. In addition no records can be found for Ethel Duckering marrying a Mr Ford or Mr Douglass, but yoi can find a record for Ethel Ford marrying Leonard Douglass in 1943 Scarborough, so I have assumed this to be correct.
