Walter apparently kept running away to Chatham to join the Navy and his father was called a number of time to pick him up. Eventually he was invited to join. (June tel. 19.1.97)

1939 Walter married a Maltese girl, probably around 1939 and not in the UK. Kathleen was about 18 years of age when Leslie was born. (June tel.19.1.97)
1939?. Walter's parents are Charles and Edith and apparently he married a Maltese girl and had one son Leslie, born sometime around 1944/5. (June and Elsie)

Walter was in the navy and was killed towards the end of the war while working with submarines. (June tel 8.2.96)
Kathleen remembers her father receiving the telegram advising that her brother Wally was presumed dead, missing in action. (Kathleen tel 8.12.96)

1942. Walter RN (C/JX 130735) was on HMS Issey (W25) a steam tug, a leading Seaman when it was sunk 28th December 1942 by u-boat U-617 off benghazi, Lybia. HMS St Issey was an 810 tons steam tug, built 1918 by Napier & Miller Ltd., Old Kilpatrick, Glasgow. It was owned by The Admiralty and was sunk by U-617 (Albrecht Brandi) with 36 dead and no survivors. Location 32° 37'N, 20° 22'E - Grid CO 4936.

1942. At 02:00 hours on 28 Dec 1942, U-617 fired two torpedoes at a tug towing two barges and observed a hit and heard a heavy detonation. At 03:36 hours, the U-boat fired another spread of two torpedoes and assumed the sinking of a barge after hearing two detonations. However, only HMS St Issey (W25) (Lt John H W Howe, RNR) was lost while twoing a brage off Benghazi, Lybia. (Source uboat.net 1/5/20)
