SIDNEY GREEN
ITHACA - Sidney Green passed away on Wednesday, June 1, at the Hospice residence. He is survived by his devoted wife, Bobbie Koepp Green, Ithaca; loving daughter, Hilary Ruth Ford, son-in-law John L. Ford, both of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Jill Carter Ford, also of Atlanta, J. Lewis Ford of St. Louis, MO, and Alison Sarah Ford Balan; grandson-in-law, Todd-Michael Balan; and great-grandson Davis Ford Balan of Rochester, NY.Sidney was born June 21, 1912 in London, England to Woolf and Sarah Sugarman Green. His beloved sister, Nancy Green Burnstock and parents preceded him in death. A cockney who attended school in London, Sidney had an inquisitive mind and a thirst for knowledge. He performed in the Tavistock Theater and worked as a printer. Sidney enlisted in the British Army and served in the Royal Signal Corps from 1939 to 1945. He married Kathleen Edith Wood on June 26, 1941 in London; their daughter Hilary Ruth was born in Minster, Kent. In 1949, the family immigrated to New York City, living in Manhattan and later in the Bronx.Within two weeks of his arrival, Sidney started work as a printer at the New York Times.Always a city dweller, Sidney knew and loved London and then New York City. He and his daughter would choose a bus at random and ride to the end of the route. These wonderful explorations enlarged both Sidney and Hilary's appreciation of the City. Following his retirement in 1974, Sidney became active in the Riverdale Community Theater where he directed and acted in several plays. In 1985, Sidney and Kathleen moved to Ithaca to be near their daughter and her family. Sidney loved living in the small city of Ithaca, particularly with the library a block from their residence in the Dewitt Building. He quickly became involved in the Ithaca theater scene, acting in the Cornell Theater, First Street Playhouse, the Hangar Theater, Ithaca College Theater and the Kitchen Theatre Company. Over the years, he put on entertainments at the Ithaca Historical Society (now the History Center in Tompkins County), pulling together quotes and quips on a given theme and working with colleagues to amuse the loyal audiences. Even after Sidney's acting days ended, he remained a loyal and enthusiastic theater patron.Sidney's much-loved wife Kathleen passed away in 1991, four months shy of their golden anniversary.Sidney met Bobbie Koepp after his move to McGraw House. They married on July 13, 1997, 100 years to the day after his parents' wedding. They shared a happy marriage, with many interests in common. In addition to his immediate family, Sidney is survived by nieces, Monica Duckering in Australia; and sister, Mary Wood in England; and nephew, Geoffrey Burnstock, also in England; his stepchildren, Cynthia J. Koepp, Aurora, NY, Nancy E. Koepp, Sebastopol, CA, and David M. Koepp, Chicago, IL; and his stepgrandson, Benjamin C.K. Waite, Yellow Springs, OH; close friends Annette Winter, CA, Jackie Buckell, England, and Andrew Diamond, Ithaca, also survive him.A memorial celebration will be held on Sunday, July 31, at 2:00 at the Hangar Theater. Sidney suggested that contributions in his memory may be given to the Hangar Theater, the History Center in Tompkins County, the Kitchen Theatre Company, McGraw House, or Tompkins County Public Library. The family thanks the Hospice staff for their loving care throughout Sidney's brief stay and would like to include Hospicare in the list of possible donations.
