The Burnside/Duckering Home, 5th Avenue North Properties
Among the areas of downtown where history is being demolished is 4th & 5th Avenues North, a corridor that has long served as a downtown gateway. The corridor includes architecturally significant homes dating to the early 1910's up to the mid-1920's, an increasingly rare downtown resource. These buildings help give our city a sense of place and make it special, something not often achieved with new development.
SPP is seeking to landmark 4 homes in the corridor but one particularly stands out: the 1914 Burnside/Duckerng home at 136 5th Ave. N.
• Architecturally significant, prairie style home
• One among the increasingly small number of pre-1920 homes remaining downtown
• First owned by Virginia Burnside, in 1920 she became the first women elected to the 'Burg's city council and the first female elected to a municipal office south of the Mason Dixon line at a time when women could not vote
• Home later owned by Mary Duckering, whose sister Florence, would winter with her and was the first female surgeon in the country admitted to the American College of Surgeons
Unfortunately, the home has been owned by Tampa developers who have left the property vacant & in disrepair after a failed development plan. The future (after the court rules in foreclose case), absent landmarking, is sure to be demolition and intense new development.
Council will vote on SPP's landmark applications on Feb. 16.

The subject property was purchased in 1921 by sisters Mary W Duckering and Dr Florence W Duckering. Records suggest that MAry lived in the property and managed it as a boarding house while Florence, the first female member of the American College of Surgeons, continued her medical practice in Boston. When Florence retired from medicine in 1946, the sisters sold the subject property and purchased a smaller home in the nearby North Shore neighborhood. Property adrees 136 Fifth Avenue North, St Petersburg, Florida, USA. From City of St Petersburg, Florida, Planning and Economic Development Department - staff report 10th January 2017.
