Notes for Dorothy Jane DUCKERING/DANIELS
The 1901 Census records at 12 Hampden Street, Nottingham the family of Bertram Daniels, head married age 43 a Draper on his own account born Broughton, Yorkshire. His wife is Sarah A age 39 born Nottingham. Their children are Ethel M M single age 17, John V. single age 13 & Marie age 8 all born in Nottingham. In additon they have the following folks in the house; Florence Holmes, servant age 16 General Domestic born London, Mary L Williams, boarder age married age 48 born in Nottinghamshire, Emma Kerch visitor, widower age 68. Winifred Krceh visitor single age 37, Sophia Kerch sisitor single age 35 all these 3 ladies living on their own means, Ellen Smith, lodger, single age 29 Warehouse assistant and Ann B Platts, boarder single age 41. A large household.
Dorothy Jane Duckering’s birth certificate records she was born 19th January 1904 at 12 Hampden Street, Nottingham. It gives her father as William Duckering of independent means and her mother as Catherine Mary formerly Clay, Duckering. The birth was registered by C M Duckering, mother of 12 Hampden Street, Nottingham.
When you research around who the parents of Dorothy might be, you can only find the marriage of William Duckering to Jane Clay, whose eldest daughter is Catherine Mary Duckering. There is no eligible William Duckering in Nottingham and no other references to a Dorothy Jane Duckering in 1911, 1939 or the electroal roll and no marriage or death. I suspect, that Catherine who had been working as a servant in big house in Barrow Upon Trent, first as nursemaid in 1891, then a domestic housemaid in 1901 became pregnant. She then suffered the discrimation of the day on what to do. In addition illegitamcy also extended its discrimation to the child. I therefore suspect that this birth registration was a means to make Dorothy legitimate. I think William is her father and then she has used her mother’s maiden name, lived at 12 Hampden Street, in an arrangement with the Daniels, who would take responsibility for Dorothy.
In the 1911 Census you find Dolly Daniels, daughter of Bertram and Sarah Ann Daniels age 7 (so born 1904) and born in Nottingham. When you search either on FindMyPast or GRO for a Dolly or Dorothy Jane for Nottingham, the only person you find is Dorothy Jane Duckering. No Daniels daughter. Interesting, the Daniels son, John Vincent now aged 22 is working as a Dental Mechanic.
I cannot find Dorothy Jane Duckering/Daniels in the 1921 Census returns. She is no longer residing with the Daniels family who are still in Nottingham in 1921.
In the Electoral Roll for 1929 & 1931 you can find Dorothy Jane Daniels with the Daniels family at 18 Binley Road, Coventry. Bertram, Sarah Ann, John Vincent and Alice Maud Daniels.
In the 1939 Register at 16 Binley Road, Coventry, record line number 6 - is found, Daniels, Dorothy J born 19 Jan 1904 single and working as a Dental Receptionist.
In 1953 England & Wales Marriages register index records Dorothy J Daniels marrying Joseph Ward in the quarter Jul/Sep 1953 Coventry, Warwickshire (Vol 9C, Page 1787).
