Albert E. Mertz, 73, died unexpectedly Dec 21 at the Big Sandy hospital where he had been admitted the previous day.
Albert was born Dec. 9, 1910 at McHenry, N.D. He came with his parents to Montana in 1911 where they had homesteaded west of Big Sandy. He farmed with his parents and later worked in the mines in Butte and the Bear Paw Mountains.
He entered the Army in 1942 where he served four years. He had served in the Pacific area. Returning in 1945 he started farming north of Loma. He was married to Esther Olson, Oct. 4, 1947, at Fort Benton. In 1972 Albert retired from farming, moving to Big Sandy where he made his home until his death. He is survived by his wife, Esther; three sons, Melvin of Tahlequah, Okla., Elmer of Loma, and Dennis of Sunburst; one brother, Paul Merta, of Polson. He was preceded in death by a son, Lewis, in 1974, and three brothers. Funeral services at the Methodist Church in Big Sandy. Burial in Big Sandy cemetery. 7399
