Notes for Mary Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
Email 4/12/2005 from John Davison:
8.8.2003 from familysearch, Mary daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth Cooke, born at Saleby 22 June and baptised 3 July 1840.
Found as a result of looking for M S Brackenbury, widow, age 42, daughter of frederick & Elizabeth Cooke, with them at Alford in 1881. I presume it must be her, but note she is 40 and not 42 in April 1881, and why the second initial S? However, I couldnt find Mahala, Martha, Mildred or Margaret born 1837-1841, so will assume it’s her.
In 1891 at Alford with her widowed mother. Widow, age 52, born Thoresthorpe. Also her daughter Maud.
In 1901, age 62, born Thoresthorpe, Lincs, at Derby. No occupation. Get image.
26.8.2003 at the baptism of her daughter in 1866 she was Mary Elizabeth Brackenbury. So presume the ’S’ was a misread by the 1881 transcriber.
12.9.2003 the 1901 image shows her at 59 Gerard Street, Derby, as sister to Frederick A Cooke, solicitor.
This reveals another member of her family, as Frederick was not seen previously, and also accounts for the solicitor Frederick Cooke who made the will of Thomas Bradley at Boston in 1866, and was a witness, Thomas being Mary’s uncle.
3.11.2003 in a codicil to the will of her cousin William Duckering BRADLEY she was to have £40pa. The will was made 8 March 1875, and the codicil 21 September 1875. She was named in the codicil as Lizzie BRACKENBURY, widow of Langley Joseph BRACKENBURY, so the codicil was obviously a reaction to he husband’s death in May 1875. The £40pa was to pass to her daughters on her death.
