Letter from Richard Duckering May 28th 1920 to Mr H C Duckering, Streamstown, Sask, Canada stamped Hope My 28, 20.

1920 ‘Hope Drug Company, R Duckering, Ph. Chemist, Manager and Proprietor.
Hope, British Columbia May 28th 1920.

My Dear Brother, Just a year ago my drug store & premises with all my stock was destroyed by fire, I was partly covered by insurance viz 5,500.00 (five thousand five hundred Dollars). I rebuilt and have got a fine house & store with about 5,000.00 drug stock etc but the builder misled me in stating the cost of the building and it has cost with the structure light plant installed between 7 and 8 thousand dollars and now I find myself in debt and am obliged to take a mortgage on the House & Store building and it occurred to me that you might be in a position to take the mortgage say four thousand dollars on the buildings, I am insured for 11,000.00 Eleven thousand dollars so you wd be fully secured against loss – if a fire ever occurred again. If I do not obtain a Mortgage or if I cannot get a loan of a couple of thousand dollars I will have to go into bankruptcy, and this wd mean with legal expenses losing everything. I wd be glad to hear from you soon, as I must raise the money as soon as possible, I have paid all the expenses connected with the building except the plumbing bill. Everything is complete, running water – Bath & Toliet & all up to modern times. I wonder if you would take a run to British Columbia & see me, we have good railway accommodation and easily reached by all Railways C.P.R, C.N.R. & K.V.R. we have three stations, 2 into Hope (& the CPR into Haig), which is about half a mile from Hope.
I would be glad if you could do this for me, and you would own the building, at about half what it has just cost me. Of course the mortgage would bear interest to you of 8 per cent, so you see it wd be a good investment.
Hope is a beautiful place in the mountains and we have a prosped here of its being one of the prettiest resorts in the Province on a/c of its beauty & it being the great gateway to the interior. I hope you are well & all yours & the boys, Ernest & Percy. Perhaps they might wish to join you in this investment. I owe about 3,500.00 & this mortgage wd lift me to safety & at the same time you wd be safe because you wd have splendid security & hold the deeds, and fire insurance policy.
Please do not mention this trouble of mine to Mother or anybody at E. Barkwith, as it wd cause Mother anxiety and I do not wish to make her worried about anything.
I wd not bother you with this, but I have nobody in Canada to interest themselves in me but you. I hope all is well with you.
Accept my best love to yourself & Dear Sister, and my nephews & nieces, also to Ernest & Percy.
& now, I hope you will write soon & believe me your affectionate Brother.
Richard
PS. Am sending you a rough proof of drug store & two views of Hope.
But soon I will have a good picture of Hope Drug Store & will send you one when I got them, the sunlight is not on the front in this picture consequently it is dark. The front of Drug Store is Very Pretty.

See copy of the original letter on file. The original is with Beverley Carley.

1930 Clarence & Grace advise that they visited Hope and that Richard's drug store was stil operational in the 1930's.
