Notes for James Henry DUCKERING
James was raised by his grandmother, as after his father's death, his mother remarried a Mr Jackson, who died soon afterwards and she then remarried again to a Mr Martin, whom she then had a number of children with. (Lee Parker 26.4.97)

When James and Ellen married they lived at Boosebeck and his grandmother lived with them. (Lee Parker 26.4.97)

James was a miner at South Skelton mine (Boosebeck) and had a number of accidents, one which resulted the loss of part of his finger. In another his leg was trapped and crushed by a wagon, which was then set incorrectly, so resulting in the use of a walking stick. He then became a check weigher at the same mine. He worked at the mine for a total of 54 years. While with the mine he was secretary of the union lodge for 35 years. He became a County Councillor, for the North Riding County Council, for which he served 16 years, and would often travel to council meetings with Mrs Ringrose-Wharton (the local squires wife, whol lived in Skelton Castle) an opposition councillor. He was also the chairman of the Cleveland Guardians Committee, with which he served for nine years. (Lee Parker 26.4.97)

Cleveland Standard, 1 December 1950. A presentation of a mdeal of merit to recognise his 58 years as a union member was made to Mr James H Duckering of Boosbeck, at the Boosbeck Station Hotel on Monday.

Cleveland Standard, 28 September 1951. 50 years married. Celebrants of the same day were: Mr and Mrs James H Duckering, of “Sunnyholme,” Boosbeck (pictured below) who were married at Skelton Parish Church. A prominent figure in public life in the district, Mr Duckering, 72, retired two years ago after 16 years as a member of the North Riding County Council. He had been checkweighman at the South Skelton mine for 34 years, and previously worked for 20 years in the mine. Last year he retired from the position of union secretary at the mine, a position he had held for 35 years. Mr Duckering has lived in Boosbeck for 71 years. Mrs Duckering, aged 69, formerly was well known as a singer in the Cleveland area. She has lived 57 years in the village. They have three sons, five daughters and 11 grand-children.

James in his latter days was looked after by his daughter, Mildred. He died on the 19th March 1962. (Lee 4.4.97 & 26.4.97)
