Joan started work at the age of 14 as a domestic in large houses. She was then trained near Gloucester how to look after barrage balloons and was stationed at Peckham Rye Park in London during the Second War. In 1946, she was back at home helping look after the family. She then worked in the GEC factory for 21 years inspecting the dialling systems of telephones. (Herself tel. 28.1.97)

Joan is the daughter of Charles and Mary, born the 28th of February 1922 at Grangetown. She is unmarried and lives at 45 Wilton Way, Grangetown, Middlesborough, Cleveland TS6 7QP. Joan is also an active Christian. (Herself tel. 28.1.97)
