James Thorley enlisted 14 August 1902. He was born Longton, Stafford and was residing at 27 Goddard Street, Longton, Stafford. He worked for Mr J Stonier of Longton asa ‘patter’. He gave his age as 18 years and 7 months. He gave his next of kin, his mother Annie, 27 Goddard St., Longton and his borther Albet of the same address.

Son of James Thorley, of Longton, Staffs; husband of Catherine Mary Thorley (nee Duckering), of 34, Wolfa St., Derby. Killed 21 August 1916. Aged 33. Born Longton (Staffs), Enlisted Lichfield, Resided Longton. Buried MAROC BRITISH CEMETERY, GRENAY.

In the 1891 Census Catherine is working as an ‘Under Nurse’ at Hill House, which is in the same village as Barrow Hall, where Catherine is found working as a Domestic Housemaid in 1901. A housemaid is one of the most junior positions in a big house and a nurse maid is even lower than a housemaid!
In 1901 Census Catherine is working as a ‘Domestic Housemaid’ at Barrow Hall, in Barrow Upon Trent. James Eadie, a Scottish brewer bought Barrow Hall circa 1890. James is 71, a widower. In the house are James, son aged 41, single, Jean, daughter 42, single, William, son single aged 37 and five other servants, all female bar the butler Ernest. The house was burnt down in 1956.
