Barbara was born on February 23, 1924, to Herschel and Bernice (Duckering) Gilbert in Wenatchee. She was raised on the Gilbert Ranch, located on the Columbia River across from the Spanish Castle. She graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1941, and then graduated from Kellogg Business School in Wenatchee. Barbara married Lowell W. Sturtz on October 20, 1941, and they raised four children. She married Gregory Z. Bitter on December 3, 1968. Greg passed away in April, 1976. On May 22, 1978, she married Richard D. Hein. Richard passed away in February, 2010. Barbara was very active in community and church affairs. She served two terms as President of the Wenatchee Emblem Club #253 and held numerous offices in the National Emblem Club. She served as President of Mary Kay Guild for Retarded Children, Wenatchee Women of Rotary, Phi Sigma Alpha - Alpha Gamma Chapter, and was organizer and first chairman of the Fruit Ladies Association. She served three years as Out-of-Town Apple Blossom Princess Chaperon and was a former member of the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club and Three Lakes Golf Club. Barbara was a member of First United Methodist Church of Wenatchee and served four years as Administration Board Secretary and was on the Outreach Commission. Following her retirement from The Cascadian Fruit Shippers in 1986 after 30 years as Executive Secretary, Barbara and Dick moved to Kent and became members of Kent United Methodist Church. She served four years as Administration Board Secretary, was on the Outreach Commission and served at the Kent Food and Clothing Bank. Following Dick's retirement, they bought a mini-farm outside of Graham, WA. They both loved to garden, constantly canning, freezing and enjoying their endless supply of fresh produce. They joined the Light of the Hill United Methodist Church and served on the Outreach Commission and Barbara served another four years as Administration Board Secretary. They changed to the Puyallup United Methodist Church, again joining the Outreach Commission and volunteering at the Graham Food Bank. Throughout her life, Barbara traveled all over the United States, plus Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Japan and Far East. Besides gardening, Barbara loved golf, walking, sewing and knitting.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Gregory Bitter and Richard Hein; two sisters, Mary Lou Frisbie and Dorothy Jean Sederquist; and step-son, Richard Hein Jr. She is survived by her sister, Vivian Genoway of Clarkston, WA; her four children, Steve (Kathy) Sturtz of Chelan, Ronald (Sandy) Sturtz of East Wenatchee, Raymond (Barbara) Sturtz of Arlington, WA and Connie (William) McDermott of Corpus Christi, TX; step-children, Teresa Sizemore of Entiat and Cheryl Hein of Ephrata; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 941 Washington Street, Wenatchee. Memorial donations may be made to Cancer Care of NCW or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.

WENATCHEE - Lowell W. Sturtz, 73, a resident of Wenatchee for the past 56 years, died Monday, Jan. 16, 1995, in Central Washington Hospital.

He was born May 26, 1921, at Mexico, Mo., where he grew up and attended school. His parents died when he was very young and he lived in an orphanage. He was later adopted by Alma Sturtz, his teacher. At the age of 17 they moved to Wenatchee where he continued his schooling. At Wenatchee High School he was very active in sports, setting a school track record in running; he graduated in 1940.

He married Barbara Gilbert at Wenatchee. Mr. Sturtz began working for the Great Northern Railroad in the early 1940s, first as a switchman and later as a foreman.

He married Reva Collins on Jan. 28, 1973, at Wenatchee, where they made their home.

Mr. Sturtz retired from the railroad in 1981, after 39 years.

He was a member of the Switchmans United Transportation Union, the Burlington Northern Vets Association and the Wenatchee Elks Lodge No. 1186.

He is survived by his wife, at home; three sons, Steven of Chelan, Ronald of East Wenatchee, and Raymond of Redmond; a daughter, Connie McDermott of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; a stepson, Dean Rompel of Freemont, Ariz.; special friends, Jerry and Betty Huber of Wenatchee; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

At his request there will be no public services. Private family inurnment services will follow at a later date. Arrangements are by Jones and Jones Funeral Directors, Wenatchee.

Richard D. “Dick” Hein was born on September 27, 1927, in Seattle, WA, to Louis L. and Zelda (Bowen) Hein. He was educated in Bremerton and Seattle Public Schools. After working in many warehouses for the Teamsters Union during the Second World War, he enlisted in the U.S.
Army in 1946, and served with the Occupation Army in Germany. This included one month guarding the German General Staff and high ranking officers. Upon leaving the Army, he started a plumbing and pipefitting apprenticeship.
In 1950, he was again called to serve in the Army during the Korean War and served as an MP for a year at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA. On August 16, 1952, he married Barbara Murray. They had three children, Richard L. (deceased), Teresa L. and Cheryl M. Hein.
Upon returning home from his military service, he completed his apprenticeship and worked on many projects in Ketchikan, AK, Eastern Washington, Seattle and Tacoma. He retired after working 41 years at his trade, and held over 50 years membership in Local U.A. #32. As an avocation, he also operated a ten acre orchard near Malaga for 25 years, taking pride in his quality fruit.
He petitioned the Masonic Lodge in 1951, and soon became an active member in the Lodge and the York Rite. He served as Worshipful Master in 1959, and was “Head” of the three York Rite Bodies in Wenatchee and served as Most Illustrious Grand Master, Royal and Select Masters of Washington in 1966. Dick served as Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons of the State of Washington in 1971.
He was honored by having six Honorary Degrees and Orders conferred upon him and also presided over all by one. Dick was a member of the Puyallup and East Wenatchee United Methodist Churches, American Legion, BPOE #1186, Riverside Lodge #112 F&AM, Wenatchee, York Rite Bodies and Scottish Rite. On May 22, 1978, he married Barbara R. Bitter and lived in Wenatchee, Kent, Auburn and settled on a mini farm near Graham, WA to grow flowers and vegetables.
They returned to Wenatchee in August of 2002, to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Louis W.; his son, Richard L. Hein; and one great-grandson. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters, Teresa Hein of Entiat and Cheryl Hein of Ephrata; and two half sisters, Jackie Ratcliff of Florida and Jill Long of Redmond, WA.
He also leaves four step-children, Steve and Kathy Sturtz of Chelan, WA, Ronald and Sandy Sturtz of East Wenatchee, Raymond and Barbara Sturtz of Arlington and Connie and Bill McDermott of Corpus Christi, TX. He and Barbara have ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A Memorial to Celebrate Dick's Life will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 941 Washington Street, Wenatchee, WA on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at 2:00 p.m.
Donations may be made in Dad's name to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
