Notes for William Elmhirst DUCKERING
William emigrated to North Dakota in 1882, where he raised Turkeys. He then moved to Olympia Washington where he worked as a professional photographer. (Don D USA 1.7.96)
William Duckering aged 33, occupation given as farmer sailed on SS Arabic arriving Ellis Island, New York, USA in 1887. See copy on file.
2191Archiveswest.orbiscascade.org records, “Duckering, William Active in Olymia, Washington, 1895. Duckering also managed Wilses Seattle Photographic Company, 1900-1913.” Apparently contains one box and they mention a photo of ‘First Presbyterian Church and neighbourhood, Olympia.’.
1897 Photograph of Mr and Mrs William Duckering was found in the archives of Museum & Archives of Vernon (MAV), Vernon British Columbia on line. When I contacted them, the only additional information they had about this photograph, was that it was donated in 1983 by John Ricketts. My own deduction is, that the style of dress is late 1800’s, the background is a house and William and Agnes where married at her parents house. In addition William was a professional photographer and so would no how to stage such a picture. In addition, there are no other William Duckering’s of the right age that would fit this bill. Therefore I have assumed that is William with the top hat, Agnes to his left and Agnes’s mother Jane to his right. The others in the photo are too difficult to identify. ‘W Duckering may have had his studio in the Olympia Hotel at the time. His advertisement is dated June 15, 1903. The following year, the beautiful Olympia Hotel was consumed in a spectacular fire. In 1907, Duckering’s studio was located at the west corner od Seventh Avenue and Main Street.’ Olympia by Jill Bullock
William separated from his second wife before the children were grown up. (Don D. USA 1.7.96)
Notes for Annie Mary (Spouse 1)
Annie was born on the 3rd of November 1861. She moved to the USA with William when she was 21. During her first pregnancy she was ill and very home sick. So William took her back to Kirton in Lindsey where their first child was born. They sailed back on the 12th of April 1883 and arrived in Baltimore on the 28th of April. Annie was a pianist and William had her piano shipped from England to the USA. (Verle 2.97)
Mary Duckering aged 25, occupation given as wife sailed on SS Arabic arriving Ellis Island, New York, USA in 1887. She was travelling with husband William and son William aged 5.
