John George L L M Armit’s mother is Mary Ann Sykes, but who his father is not so clear, as the father claimed died 16th June 1868. Records found so far in date order.
The 1861 Census Jersey, records Louis Armit and three of his children Bessie, Adela & Naomi are with him, including Mary Anne Sykes, servant unmarried aged 21 born England.
The Statement of the Services of Louis John Amadee Armit of the Royal Engineers records he was born in Dublin, Ireland 30th December 1825. It records him from 2nd Lieutenant 18th June 184? Cadet through to Lieut. Colonel Royal Engineers 27th Feb 1866 and then retirement 14th Aug 1867 due to Ill Health. It says he served during the Crimean campaign - present in command of a Company of Royal Sappers and Miners at the Siege of Sebastopol. In then records his two marriages and children. Ist marriage 5th May 1847 Portsea Hants Sarah Elizabeth Bredin, dead, children, Henry Robert Percy Bredin born 10th Feb 1848 Bermuda, Louis Arnold born 18th Sept 1849 Bermuda, Bessie Adela Jeaninette born 16th Feb 1862 Woolwich & Naomi Margaret Kate born 28th May 1853 Enniskillen. 2nd marriage 13th June 1865 St Mary’s Church Old Brompton, London, Mary Ann Sykes and no children recorded.
16th June 1868 Louis John Amadee Armit died Five Oaks, Jersey. Probate declares effects under £8,000
17th June 1868 the military record shows Mary Ann Armit was paid £50 per annum paid per quarter from Dec 1868 to June 1872. 1877 to 1882. 1882-1892. In todays money £50 is circa £6,000.

1901 Census records Mary Ann boarding in Bournemouth declared as single ‘Living on own means’.
1901 Census 103 Monks Road, Lincoln records John & Sarah. His birth location given is London.
1911 Census records Mary Ann Armit, widow age 72 (born 1835) in the same household with John at 20 Albion Terrace, Oundle Road, Peterborough. This suggests John was born Kensington, London.
1912 Probate is recorded: Armit, Mary Anne of 20 Albion Terrace, Oundle Road, Peterborough widow died 30 April 1912. Probate London 8 June to John George Louis le Mottee Armit Mechanical Engineer. Effects £233 11s 4d.

Memorable Manitobans: John George Louis Le Mottee Armit (1875-1955) Businessman, municipal official.
Born at London, England on 11 March 1875, son of Armedie Armit and Mary Ann Sykes, he came to Canada with his widowed mother in 1882 (believe it to be 1892) and homesteaded near
Fort Ellice. In 1898, their log cabin was destroyed in a fire while they were absent. Soon after they returned to England where he worked as a draftsman. On 15 June 1899, he married Sarah Kate Duckering (1875-1951) and they had three children: Phyllis Armit (1901-?), John Charles Louis Le Mottee Armit (1904-1910), and Louis Le Mottee Armit (1912-1970). In November 1912, the family emigrated to Canada and settled at
Foxwarren.
He bought a hardware store which he operated until it was destroyed in the “Big Fire” of 1 May 1928 that affected much of the town’s business district. He then worked in insurance until 1939 when he became Municipal Clerk for the Village of Foxwarren, a position he held until his death. He also was a Justice of the Peace,
Mayor of Foxwarren (1921-1922), and a
Police Magistrate. He was a member of Westminster United Church, where he was Sunday School Superintendent, served on the Provincial Board of Directors for the Manitoba Red Cross, and was a Vice-President of the Red Cross.
He died at
Foxwarren on 1 July 1955 and was buried in the
Foxwarren Cemetery.

In 1940 her brother Richard visited her in the USA and it records her address as Fort Warren, Manitoba
