Lincolnshire Echo, 22 April 1942. Obituary. By the death of Mr Joseph Duckering, of The Villa, East Barwith, at the age of 46, East Barkwith and district has lost a well-known personality. He served his apprenticeship under Messrs. Holmes and Son, builders, wrgaby, and joined the Royal Engineers in the last war, but was discharged. When the present war broke out he joined the Home Guard, but owing to ill health had to resign. He was the fourth son of Mr Ezra and the late Mrs Mary Ann Duckering. He attended the Methodist Church for several years.

Louth Standard, 25 April 1942. Sold 1,000 Ferrets a week! late Mr J Duckering of Barkwith.
mr Joseph Duckering, known to everybody for many miles around East Barkwith as “Joe,” passed away at the week end at the early age of 46 years. The high regard in which he was held by farmers and village people was shown by the crowded and very representative congregation which gathered at the Parish Church, East Barkwith, for the funeral on Monday.
“Joe’s” contacts for many years past had been so wide and so numerous that it would almost be true to say of himin his special sphere that he was all things to all men. He sold wool to Bradford and ferrets to Ireland. He bought fallen stock from farmers and went out of his way to serve those with whom he had dealings in all sorts of ways.
As a dealer in ferrets, he built up one of the best connections in the whole country. Before the war he exported ferrets regularly to the Continent adn America. His turnover in this unusual trade probably amounted at one time to 1,000 ferrets a week.
It was not only, however, that “Joe” was successful in a business sense. He enjoyed a personal popularity and esteem which only those living in the country, and coming into contact with him as he jogged along the by-ways in his old-fashioned horse and cart, could properly appreciate.
The funeral service was conducted by the Rector of East Barkwithg, Canon F Kerr Thompson, assisted by the Rev V Charles, the local Methodist minister. The hymns sung were “Nearer my God to thee,” and “Rock of Ages,” and at the close Mr A W Longbottom, who was at the organ, played “O Rest in the Lord.”
The long cortege of mourners was headed by Mr Ezra Duckering, the 86 years old father of the deceased, now almost a patriarchal figure. etc….
