Notes for Maude Bartrum (Spouse 1)
Maude started a girls' school in Broadstairs called "valetta House". The school was taken over by Janet and Florence, who were Bartrum relations and they renamed the school "Bartrum Gables". The school is still running and under the same name.

On file there are a number of transcribed letters largely Maude to her daughter Gwen in New Zealand from circ 1919 to 1936.
Notes for Maude Bartrum (Spouse 1)
Maude married her first cousin Walter William Osmond. Jack Sadler, brother to Dolly Sadler who married Walter's younger brother Percy, wrote this letter on the 27th of October 1892, less than a month before their wedding. "Good old Maude and Good old Wattie, hooray! - Halleluyah! The day has come when you are to begin your amplier life and we wish you more than I can put down here. Love you have and the fruition of your darling wish; so we wish, and more than wish, for health and wealth, and long continuance, and steady growth of the "dear home land" which dates from this day when the new ring is placed on the finger, which it will never leave - I don't think anybody can wish you more or more heartily than we do for you two - and it's jolly unselfish of us too 'cause we miss Maude tremendously Wattie I can tell you old chap. It's quite different to us at Broadstairs and my little girl (his sister Dollie?) has lost a mother and sister and more to boot. Yet we don't grudge you the happiness you have both waited and worked for so patiently and splendidly. Have (lots) of good times and look sharp and make your pile and come home to us all again - and we will keep your places for you never fear. Kindest rememberances to your Pater and Mater (in law) from yours very affectionately, Jack Sadler." Everyone admired Maude - she possessed a very strong character which was probably enhanced during her marriage to Walter because he suffered from poor health during much of his life, and it is thought that he had a nervous break-down during the War. Many of the family responsibilities naturally fell on Maude's shoulders and these were further added to when 'Chowringhee' had to be sold up and the family moved to a smaller house in Salisbury, where three years later Walter died in 1926. Her obituary shows she was very active in her last years. "..Mrs Osmond was for many years a loyal and valued worker and speaker fro the Mother's Union. She was correspondent for the work overseas, and also for temperance, and was keenly interested in both, while she made all temperance work most attractive and interesting. The branch of the Mother's Union in Alderbury was started by her in 1902, and she never lost her interest in the branch, even after ceasing to be enrolling member and ceasing toreside in the parish. Only two years ago, owing to failing health, she was obliged to give up active work for the Diocesan Council and also her membership of the Salisbury Musical Society."
